The skills taught at Aims apply to many areas of the music industry. Produce sound at live gigs, create professional-quality recordings, compose electronically or create the sound for film. Certificates allow you to explore several different practical applications for your craft at a lower cost than a degree program.

Audio Production Level I Certificate

Learn basic audio production techniques such as operating audio equipment and producing tracks. Develop the fundamentals of mixing and creating a final master.

Includes the fundamentals of audio mixing from the audio source to final master. By explaining the principles of mixing and the technical foundations of audio recording. Analyzing the principles of acquiring, manipulating, recording, and final mixing of audio and discussing the differences between digital and analog recording. Each student will summarize the function of microphones, audio sources, recording devices, and speakers and complete recording exercises and projects according to provided guidelines. Audio Production Level II Certificate

Build on your skills to produce live sound and advanced digital editing techniques. Master time compression, harmonic and rhythmic manipulation and sound processing with plug-ins.

Explores the use of sound equipment to produce a quality listening experience for the intended audience. The class will focus on how sound can enhance live productions. Students will learn how to use sound equipment as a tool for such production. Prerequisite: Course is not repeatable for credit.

Explores the use of editing digital audio by making use of the Pro Tools software environment. The student will have hands on opportunities to work with industry conventions such as time compression/expansion, harmonic and rhythmic manipulation ("Autotune" and "Beat Detective"), destructive and real-time processing (plugins). File formats for delivery and exchange, compressed and full resolution, will be addressed, as well as other digital audio workstations, computer platforms, hardware interfaces, and data connection protocols. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Audio Production Level III Certificate

Create your own passion project. Learn to produce sound for film and video and then demonstrate all you’ve learned with a capstone project: a self-led audio project with instructors to support you.

This introduction to sound for film and video provides instruction on acquisition of audio on location and post-production methods. Students will apply the techniques and tools discussed in class to practical exercises and group environments. Students will analyze sound information to prepare projects for the post-production process and learn to synthesize the acquired results with the visual elements of the story to enhance the emotional impact of a piece. Students will be introduced to sweetening techniques, musical compositions and Foley. . Explore sound as storytelling with courses on sound design and MIDI. Learn to set up a music technology workstation and design sound at a professional level.
