Television & Video ProductionCertificates

Certificate programs give you the chance to explore a subject and build sought-after skills in less time than it takes to complete a degree program. Aims offers three TV and video production certificates that take two semesters each to complete. 

Learn how to generate ideas and map them out on a storyboard. Gain skills using state-of-the-art camera, audio and lighting equipment used in broadcast TV, film and videography. Get experience directing video shoots and working in pre- and post-production. 

Video and Television Production, Level I Certificate

Study basic and advanced television studio production techniques and learn how to direct a shoot. Learn single- and multi-camera production, video effects, chroming, and studio production for news, sports and weather.

Note: These two classes are prerequisites for the Level II video and television certificate courses.

Examines principles and techniques of basic television production and direction in a laboratory setting using commercial television broadcast equipment for broadcast and institutional video productions. . Course is not repeatable for credit.

Introduces additional principles and techniques of television production in theory and the approach of studio and production in news, weather and sports. Emphasizes direction and production development to include single and multi-camera production. Examines use of effects and chroming. Includes laws and ethics governing the television broadcast industry and Institutional Television. Differential tuition rates apply. Department approval is required. Course is not repeatable for credit.

RTV 1202 with a grade of "C" or better.

Video and Television Production, Level II Certificate

Learn advanced television and video production techniques with this video production certificate. Learn sound design, video field production, and video editing techniques and software including Final Cut Pro.

Explores the use of sound in multimedia production and audio storytelling. Students examine the principles of recording. Classes focus on how sound can enhance interactive productions and improve computer presentations. Students learn how to use the computer as a full audio editing studio. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Prepares students for production of professional-quality video programming. Students will be afforded the opportunity to attain proficiency in single-camera remote videography, as well as post-production editing and recording engineering. Differential tuition rates apply. Department approval is required. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Introduces the basic concepts and skills of non-linear editing using Final Cut Pro. The student will demonstrate comprehension in various editing techniques and apply the acquired knowledge to exercises in the class. The student will analyze other editors' works for aesthetic and technical merit and develop an understanding of industry standards and expectations. Capturing, outputting, and software integration are covered. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Introduces the basic concepts and skills of non-linear editing using Avid Media Composer. The student will gain facility in digitizing, compression, inputting, outputting, and software integration as well as the principles of nonlinear editing. The student will demonstrate comprehension in various editing techniques and apply the acquired knowledge to exercises in the class. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Introduces to digital non-linear video editing. Students will capture, compress, edit, and manipulate video images using a personal computer. Assembly techniques including media management, editing tools, titles, and motion control; transitions and filters, and special effects are explored. Course is not repeatable for credit.

Video Writing Certificate

Learn writing skills unique to radio and television and how to write corporate video scripts. Gain skills in professional scriptwriting techniques, format and style for TV, radio and corporate scripts.
