The Community Lab, opened in 2017, is sponsored by the Aims Industrial Technologies and Energy Services program. It’s a collaborative space where Aims students, faculty, and community members can learn about design, fabrication, electronics, and craftwork, with expert guidance available throughout. The lab is always free for all; no sign-up is required.
The Community Lab attracts various participants, from families to retirees to students, all coming together to discover new skills and create something meaningful. For example, a woman came in who broke a part of a TV tray and the lab was able to use the 3D printer to replace the part and fix it.
The lab is also a valuable resource for students working on class projects for art, marketing, engineering and more. Created in the lab were educational aids for visually impaired students and fake stomas for training dummies used for medical instruction in healthcare scenarios.
