This page provides answers to common questions students and parents might have about registering for classes as well as adding, dropping, and withdrawing from classes at Aims. Click on the links in the sidebar to view the questions and answers for other Registration & Records-related topics.
When can I register for classes?
Please refer to the most current Academic Calendar for important days regarding registration. Please note that registration will open by the number of credits a student has earned. Please check your "View Registration Appointments" box in Workday.
How long do I have to drop or add a class?
Adding classes must be done within the first 7 percent of the course. For full-term fall and spring courses, this is generally five days into the semester, and for summer it is generally just three days into the semester. Please be aware that short courses and late-starting courses may have their own deadlines. Dropping classes must be done within the first 15 percent of the course. Tuition and fees are refunded and no academic record will be generated for classes dropped within this timeline.
Learn how to add, drop, and withdraw for either in-person or online classes on the Registration & Records Register, Add, Drop & Withdraw page.
What if I want to add a class after the add deadline?
After the 7 percent date has passed, adding or registration may be done on an exception basis only if space is available and the instructor has given signed permission to enroll. Learn how to add, drop, and withdraw for either in-person or online classes on the Registration & Records Register, Add, Drop & Withdraw page.
What if I need to drop a class, and it’s past the drop deadline for that class?
Any class dropped after the 15 percent deadline will become a withdrawal and will generate a “W” grade on the student's record. There are no refunds for withdrawing from a course. The “W” grade does not affect your GPA, but failure to finish any class can affect the student's financial aid. Students may withdraw from classes through 75 percent of the class. Learn how to add, drop, and withdraw for either in-person or online classes on the Registration & Records Register, Add, Drop & Withdraw page.
I see that there are different registration dates for new and returning students. What is the difference?
A returning student is one who is enrolled in classes the semester prior to registration. If you take a semester off (except summer) you are considered a 'new student' for registration dates. Returning students can register one week before open registration to provide students close to graduation the first choice of classes.
What's the difference between dropping and withdrawing from a class?
You can drop a class either in person or online during the first 15 percent of the class. A dropped class results in a refund, doesn't show up on your transcript and doesn't impact your GPA. After the drop period, and until 75 percent of the class is complete, you may withdraw from a class. You may withdraw either in person or online. A withdrawn class does not result in a refund and will result in a grade of "W", but the grade doesn't impact your GPA. Learn how to add, drop, and withdraw for either in-person or online classes on the Registration & Records Register, Add, Drop & Withdraw page.
What do I do if a class is closed?
If a class is closed, requires department approval, or has a prerequisite restriction that you do not meet, you will need an override to add the class. Overrides are given at the instructor/department's discretion. You will need to contact the instructor and request the needed override. If the instructor gives you an override you will still register yourself for the course in question as normal once the override is in place.
If it is past the add deadline and you wish to add a course, you will need to complete a Course Late Add form and submit it to Records@aims.edu. Please follow all the directions on the form and obtain all needed signatures before submitting. Contact Records@aims.edu if you have any questions.
How do I get a copy of my schedule?
You may check your schedule online anytime. Remember to print a copy of your schedule to ensure its accuracy before classes begin and before major deadlines.
